Chicago’s Magnificent Mile is famous for luxury shopping, world-class architecture, and historic landmarks—but tucked among the high-rises is a building with a fascinating past: the InterContinental Hotel Chicago. Beyond its modern elegance lies a history few visitors notice, including a lavish gold-tiled swimming pool and origins as a private men-only club.
The building that houses the InterContinental Hotel opened in 1929 as the Medinah Athletic Club, a private club for members of the Shriners organization. It wasn’t just a social hub—it was an entertainment complex that included:
A bowling alley
A shooting range
Tennis courts
One of the city’s most opulent indoor pools
The Great Depression forced the club to close, leaving the building vacant for several years. Eventually, it was converted into the InterContinental Hotel, preserving much of its original architectural beauty while opening its doors to the public.
The hotel’s most remarkable feature is its historic swimming pool, a true relic of 1920s luxury. Designed as the centerpiece of the Medinah Athletic Club, the pool includes:
Hand-painted Spanish tiles along the walls and floor
Gold mosaic accents that shimmer in the light
Arched windows and high ceilings that create an airy, elegant atmosphere
The pool was once a hub for social gatherings and swimming competitions, making it a highlight of Chicago’s elite social scene. The pool is often called the "Johnny Weissmuller pool" after the Olympic swimmer and actor who trained there. Today, guests of the InterContinental Hotel can still enjoy the pool, stepping into a piece of Chicago’s hidden history.
Beyond the pool, the building features a Middle Eastern-style dome, ornate ceilings, and intricate tile work—a nod to its Shriners’ heritage. Each detail tells a story, making the InterContinental Hotel not just a place to stay, but a glimpse into Chicago’s past.
